A few weeks back, we were on holidays together with our families in California. We watched the NCAA Boys Basketball West Regional Tournament as Arizona play against Witchita State. As we walked around the Staple Centre in Los Angles, my brother kept stopping and stretching out his right hamstring.
I asked him, “What happened to your leg?”
He replied, “I pulled my hamstring playing basketball. Do you have any ideas on what I can do for it?”
Before I get to my answer, here’s a little back story…
My brother started his active life with no injuries, but as time has passed by he has gotten more and more injuries.
We both love to play basketball. However, I have stopped playing basketball while my brother continues to play basketball even though he is now approaching 40. We both became successful in our chosen field of work through our passion and love for our profession.
Now, to my answer…
I had been doing some research on hamstring injuries and trying out some new techniques when it came to hamstring injury recovery.
One thing he was doing wrong was his stretching. He was only stretching out the hamstrings in a straight leg position. I fixed his stretching by adding stretching of the hamstrings at different knee and hip positions in order to stretch the hamstring in different ways, leading to better and faster recovery from his hamstring injury.
Also I encouraged him to do some more agility training and core stability work.
Let me explain.
Most trainers, therapists and coaches will focus only on strengthening and strengthening alone when it goes to a hamstring injury. But this is not the best way of preventing a hamstring re-injury, which happens in about 1/3 of people.
Based on a research article that I came across in the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy, there was a research paper that compared a program of strength and stretching with a program involving agility training and core stability.
It was found that the agility training and core stability program was superior than the stretching and strengthening program for decreasing the risk of re-injury after returning back to sports.
My brother felt a big difference when he applied the stretching techniques and core training and agility work I suggested.
